Earlier this year, the president signed legislation to extend and improve the tax credits for windows, doors, and skylights established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This tax credit program is intended to stimulate the economy, while simultaneously promoting the use of energy efficient products for the home.

How much can I save?

You can receive a tax credit of 30% of the cost of qualifying product(s), excluding installation fees. The maximum credit is $1500 cumulative between the 2009 and 2010 tax years. A tax credit is more valuable than a tax deduction, because it reduces your tax dollar for dollar ($1500 credit = $1500 less tax owed) whereas a deduction only reduces your tax owed by the percentage of your tax bracket (ex. $1500 credit, if you are in a 25% tax bracket = $375 less tax owed).

What kinds of products qualify for the Tax Credit?

The key is the 30/30 Rule: Windows, doors, and skylights purchased on or after June 1, 2009 must have U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings of 0.30 or less. The lower the number, the more energy efficient it is. The qualifying products are great because they save on the cost of energy, make your home more comfortable, improve the value of your home and even lessen American dependence on foreign oil.
